Just Bearing Through it

Well, I was in preparation for this Memorial Day weekend camping trip.  I was tying up loose ends, paying bills, and running errands on my Suzuki DR 650.  When it seemed that almost all of my errands were near completion, I hear a sound.  A crunch really.  Followed by a pop.  And then several more crunches.  Hmm, says I, that appears to be coming from the back of my bike.  That can’t be good.  So I get off of my motorcycle and inspect the area in question.  I feel and then shake.  The back tire moves over an inch in any given direction.  Arrgh, that is the wheel bearing.  I call the parts house to get my bearing and send my wife after it.  She brings back not one but three bearings and one seal (they did not have one of the seals that I needed).  After tearing into the assembly I discovered that the real culprit was actually the cog bearing.  Man that thing was shot and dry as a bone.  The other had seen better days as well, thus a full change out was in order.

So I begin the reinstall, WTF, these don’t fit.  Yep, the parts house is closed and now I have to wait until tomorrow, GEEZ!  So then I go back the next morning and get the proper parts.  Despite a huge mess and larger amounts of grease on my bike and person, it was a fairly easy job.  That is three days without my motorcycle.  Thank God it is done.  Hey what is this, I need brakes.  Ugh, I will do that on the camping trip.  Right now I need to ride.

Below are some pix of this project:

That is how you do it without the $280 motorcycle jackHey is something missing here? The broken and used up parts
