We are now the typical American family….

Well, now with the forthcoming arrival of our third child, it has become necessary to get another vehicle.  We need something with more room, third row seats, DVD player, and good gas mileage.  Anyone know of a muscle car that fits that description…how about a sports car?  Any body….please…..sigh.  So we went into town and bought a minivan.  Yes that is right we are that family now.  I will have to say that it turned out to be a better looking vehicle than I had feared.  I had already pictured us in a proverbial cracker box on wheels.  Instead we purchased a 2004 Pontiac Montana.

2004 pontiac montana

This is a stock photo as it was too dark to take a picture for this entry.  I will add a real picture later.

This thing is awesome in the way of creature comforts (compared to what I am used to).  It appears that all of the stuff works too (amazing).  It has an automatic sliding side door, sliding doors on both sides, 3 rows of seats, a DVD player built into the back, rear heating, folding down back two rows of seats, a backup assistant (Becky already found this one to work fine), and all kinds of other stuff that will take another year to find.  It is like a treasure hunt on wheels.

Another thing that I do like about it is that you don’t see too many of these out there.  It seems that the roads are flooded with Dodge Grand Caravans and their brethren.  My sister in law also falls into this category.  I like those but it is good to be a little different.  I am also impressed with the sportiness of the van.  It has that “I am a soccer mom that will run your butt over anyway” look.  I attribute this mainly to the position of the fog lights which also work splendidly.

All in all, I am not totally sold on it but I do not hate it either.  It definitely is what we are needing though.  Becky is happy and that is what matters.  It IS  her vehicle, and what she wanted.  As the saying goes “Happy wife, happy life”.

Slush!

There is a joke that goes:

“Did you hear that in the seventies the Chevy Nova was no longer to be sold in Mexico?”

“No, really, Why?”

“Well in Spanish, Nova means “No Go””.

So taking that into consideration, if you figure

Slush+Morning sleet and rain+1993 Chevy Camaro = Nova

So I just got back from an outing, figuring with the multitude of road trucks that I have seen working, that I would have no problem making my rounds.  WRONG!  It all began with my driveway, which I have to admit was the worst of my troubles, and went from there.  I spun all the way out….sideways.  Which I have to admit was fun.  I also made a decent rut in the slush and ice just digging down to get to the gravel.  As long as I remained on major roadways I was fine, but to venture off was nothing more than to sit still spinning my tires…wheeee!  I did, however, make it back home safely and without incident.  I was actually delighted that I even made it back into my proper parking place ( a pet peeve of mine is not being able to be in my parking spot, so stay out of it).

ALLARDT PUMPKIN FESTIVAL CAR SHOW….WHEEE!

Ok if you are just interested in the Pumpkin Festival you need to look below at my previous entry.  If you like cool cars and motorcycles, then please continue.  I have posted some of the cars and bikes that really caught my eye.  I have created a Flikr account to show all of the cars that stood out.

This year was also exceptional as I gave an estimate of over 150 cars present at this years showing.  Cars ranged in every form of automobile.  If you could not come here and find a vehicle that you would want to drive home in, then you just won’t ever find one.  There were trucks, muscle cars, new cars, rat rods, clunkers, customs, and the list goes on.  I was really amazed at the diversity of it all.  It was also neat to talk with the owners as many set up lawn chairs and greeted those willing to talk.  One could get a complete vehicle history from some of these friendly persons.  I say persons because one of the nicest Corvettes here was owned by a lady.  No guys, I don’t think she is single.  So wade through the pictures below.  If you want to see more then go here to my Flikr site.  Don’t forget to hover over pix for more info.

yep that is a new '10 Camaro SS This is such classy Corvette, really shows how the cars have grown in size. a 1970 Cuda, rrrrooowwwrrr. A very slick '10 Challenger I was very surprised to see this Viper RT/10 One of the newer Corvettes, the lady owner fired it up for us to hear it rumble. gigity gigity One of the sharpest new Mustangs I have seen Talk about diversity.

Below are some examples of the motorcycles that were in the Motorcycle Show.  Pay special attention to the first and last entries, they may surprise you.

Click for the full image and look carefully. Very interesting and disturbing. Just cool classic. Dig out that leather jacket to look at this one. yep this is a motorcycle, don't see it. Look at the next picture. Here is the power for this Suzuki.

The newest car in the lineup

It seems like all I work on this site is the cars now, right?  Not really.  These are just the benefits of several weeks of working just now coming to fruition.  But if you refresh the page in order to see the various cars, you will see a 1979 Camaro running across the top of the screen.  Tom did an outstanding job with this one as well.  The dark coloration with the shadows made this one a challenge for him.  Nathan also got this one out at record time.  Thanx guys, the list will cars will end…someday.

Yep, there is another car in the lineup.

I have added yet another car in the lineup of cars that race across the screen as you load up my site.  As usual, the artwork was done by my friend Tom.  He went to great pains on this one as the grid design was quite a pain in the butt.  Nathan got this one on in record time.  I do believe that he has gotten the knack of this (seeing how he does this kinda thing for a living).

I am so pleased with this one, just as much as the rest.  If you want to see the older post concerning the 1972 Nova, go to the rebuild, cleanup, and tire spinning of the car.  Thanks again to Tom and Nathan, without which this site would not be up or look near as cool.

1971 Pontiac GT 37 is now cartoonized

You may have noticed, as I mentioned, that there is a new car in my line up of cars that come across the top of the screen.  This is my dad’s 1971 Pontiac GT 37.  I will be doing an entry on it soon.  My friend, Tom, cartoonized this car for my sight recently and now it has been implemented into the new reconstruction of this site.  As usual he has done an excellent job.  He is currently working on another car which will soon join the others.  I can’t wait.

The original pic.  The cartoonized version by Tom

Thanx again Tom.  You truly help to make my site better and better.  And a big thank you to Nathan who made it possible to put these pictures up and have them scrolling across the screen.

If anyone out there would like something like this “cartoonization” use the “contact me” tab and he may be able to help.

Nova in Spanish means “NO GO”

As the joke goes:  The introduction of the Chevy Nova was never a hit in Mexico since Nova means “no go” in Spanish.  In Tennessean, it now means “it goes again!”  You may have noticed that I have not been posting much lately.  To be honest I have been overwhelmed with projects that consume my daylight hours and leave me wiped out for the night.  The only other activity that I partake of is Halo.  Let’s face it, I would play Halo if it was my last day on Earth.

One of the projects that has kept me busy is reintroducing the 1972 Chevy Nova of my Dad’s back into transportation.  As many of you remember from my previous post on this car, the poor car was in derelict condition and had not run for nearly a decade.  That is now the past, as it is once again mobile under its own motor driven ability.  This is not a small accomplishment.  Thus this may seem to be a long posting, but I need to make up for all the time that I have missed.  For you car people, you will like this.  For the rest of you, sorry but I have had posting of little girls and teddy bears recently.  Time to “man up” the site for a little while.  (insert Tim Allen grunting now)

Note:  Any time I say “we”, I am referring to Pete, myself, and Dad or any combination of the three.  Without Pete’s help this would never had been possible, Thanks Pete.

Don’t just skim these photos too quickly, you may miss the video at the end.  And yes, there will be a test at the end of class.

...and it starts

We begin the project by dragging the car out into the open where we can work on it.  We promptly removed the hood and totally exposed the engine bay.  Days of forecasted rain were ahead, so we kept a tarp handy.  A necessary tool for any “shade tree mechanic”.

Lets get busy.

We then remove the motor and strip it down.  We knew that the engine had “issues”, but did not know what they were.  Some of the people that had been associated with the Nova in the past even suggested that possibly some foreign parts may have been put into the block.  Sheesh.

Very badly worn lifter The culprit: wrong cam

What we found was unbelievable.  As we were pulling the Chevy 350 SB, we discover parts of the transmission do not line up with the motor back.  Upon further investigation it is concluded that this was a 6 cylinder Pontiac transmission held to the engine with only 2 bolts!  Glad that it didn’t run, it would not have made it far.  Also after digging into the motor we found massive inconsistencies in the wear of the lifters and on several of the lobes on the cam.  In the picture above you see two lifters pictured.  The one on the right has developed a massive dip while the other stayed somewhat normal.  Several of the cam lobes were totally worn out and rounded.  This explained the push tubes bending and the motor not running at all.  We came to the conclusion that someone had actually put the wrong cam in and decided to just “freshen up” the motor with proper parts and use what we could of the existing ones.

some weird marking on the rod Another rod with some weird marking

Further inspection into the old motor components revealed some VERY NICE forged pistons that looked nearly new.  The rods also were a very expensive brand that looked nice as well.  Zero wear was discovered in the wrist pins.  The only sign of wear was some strange “stress marks” on the rods.  These seemed to be fine after inspection and we decided to use them.  After all we are going stock and this is just a freshening up…right?

We are almost done...not

We place the motor into the bay after “freshening it up” and anxiously put it together to fire it up.  We used the old 6 cylinder trans in the name of expediency and let her crank.  You are expecting me to say that it didn’t start aren’t you.  Well, you are wrong.  It started up beautifully.  Purred like a kitten.  Then this little kitten peed on the ground.  We inspected the leak to determine that nature of the mystery fluid.  It was not oil, too clear.  Not power steering fluid, too thin.  Couldn’t be water it is in the back of the motor.  WRONG!  It was water, in the back of the motor.  What we discovered was a cracked block.  (insert many vulgar expletives now).

Newly cleaned Chevy 350 Let's take this indoors.

Pete finds us another Chevy 350 block to take the place of the busted one.  It had to be at least close to stock to re-use parts.  This one was freshly milled and decked.  It also had been chemically cleaned and stripped of all impurities.  We then move into the building to work for it has been raining cats and dogs for days.  This place is looking like a wrecking ball hit it.

freshly built Chevy 350

To make an already long story shorter.  We get the motor together with little hassle, other than Mother Nature totally saturating us.  Dad finds a matching transmission (Chevy 350 Turbo).  We thus get a new a new starter and join up the motor and transmission together.  Dad also buys a new carburetor as the old one had “vanished”.  We drop the combo in and voila, all the parts come together.  The motor starts up fine with only minor problems occurring.  All is fixed (including a small oil leak and flipping the flywheel to the proper direction:  those have to face the right way ya’ll.).  We start it and begin to drive it up and down the drive to ensure that it is ok.  Then, dum dum dum.  I look as it makes one pass up the driveway and see some fluid leaking, ALOT!  Come to find out it has a massive gas leak in the lines near the tank.  I replace around 8 feet of steel gas line and we begin again.  This time it is finished.

Our coworker, James, did an immaculate job cleaning the very dirty 1972 Chevy Nova.  He really had to scrub to get off years of leaf debris and dust.  He got it to shining, however, and it has not looked this good in years.  It somehow looks better just for the fact that I know that it runs now.  Hover over pix to reveal comments about them.  Don’t forget the video at the end.

The cleaning really showed a very attractive car.I love the sun glint here. The spoiler had to be reattached. This is the only car I have seen with this kind of graphics.Seat covers were taken off the show some unexpectedly decent seats. We removed 2 dash covers to reveal a pretty good dash tha was vastly better than the covers.I have never seen a tachometer like this before.

Dad fired the Nova up and the first thing he did was……

Build your own 2010 Camaro

Are you craving the new Chevrolet Camaro like I am?  Well since I did not win the Power Tour Camaro from Hot Rod magazine, I have found another way to get it that does not cost anything.  If you like the sound of this then continue reading.

I have found a site that not only advertises the Camaro but also lets you pick you options and basically build the Camaro that you would order from GM.  You get a full round the vehicle view.  You also get the average cost of the vehicle that you put together.  It is neat and informative.  Go ahead try it yourself….here!!!!

Mine is the 2LT with the RS package ($28,825) what would you get?

Que Que Sera Sera….."Missed the Power tour Blues”

After all my anticipation of looking forward to the Hot Rod Power Tour, I have once again missed my opportunity.  I had three problems in this year’s venture.

1.  I have been industriously working on some things that are muy importante’.  These really cannot just be dropped but could have been worked around.  sigh  Such is life I guess…

2.  Being scattered as I have been due to #1, I had forgotten that the tour would be closest to me today.  I had thought that it was coming to Somerset Saturday.  (Way to go Dave)

3.  The biggest reason that I have missed this phenomenal event can be summed up in one word.  RAIN!!!!!!!!!!  About the time that they had reached their destination, a huge front had wound its way to me and all around.  I am not talking a drizzle here.  I am talking about rain, flash flooding on roads, and significant damage in some areas.  The first two reasons could possibly have been worked around, but the third is it.  Three strikes and I am out.

In spite of my “missed the Hot Rod Power Tour again” woes, I (and you can follow it quite extensively at the Hot Rod Power Tour Official Site.) have been following the tour through the web.  Here you can see coverage for the previous stops and even view live footage as they travel from site to site.  While viewing you can chat with other viewers and even the staff as they cruise from origin to destination.  I have caught some of the live viewing (have to work, can’t watch it all day) and found it to be interesting and a good way to become a zombie.  After a while you even get that “been in the car too long” feeling.  Surprisingly, response from the Hot Rod staff is quick and informative.  They have one destination left, Bristol, TN.  Nope, I won’t be going to that one either.  sigh again

2010 Chevrolet Camaro

While on my camping trip this weekend, I came upon the Mecca of modern day muscle cars.  This probably the most over-hyped and still the most anticipated vehicle today.  After nearly an 8 year hiatus, the Camaro has made its return to the streets.  It has only been available for a little over a week.  A nice and most lucky man from Indiana managed to get one.  Is my face green yet, sigh.  I approached the man slowly and tried to put on a face that he would trust.  I calmly swallowed the lump in my throat and asked, “Hey, is that your Camaro?”

He replied, “Yep”  so coolly he said this.

I dared asked, “Would you mind if I took a closer look.  I promise not to touch it.”

He said, “Sure, it’s just a car.”

JUST A CAR?!?!?!

I looked until my drool was nearing the brand new Pirelli’s.  Before I left, however, I snapped a few pix with my camera phone.  Thank God for technology.

Who would take this camping? What...a bird dared to poop on it? This whole car is NICE!
